Michael Sugrue Consultant Doctor Northwest Regional Academy

Michael Sugrue qualified from the University of Galway, Ireland in 1981 with many undergraduate distinctions.  He received Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 1985. Most of his surgical training was undertaken in Galway and Dublin. 

Moving to Australia in 1989 he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1991 and his MD University of New South Wales in Sydney in 2001.   He was appointed Professor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales and Liverpool Hospital Sydney in 2005.

He was a Specialist surgeon at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney for 15 years.  He is a former founder and President of the World Society of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome.  He has received many awards for his dedication and achievements in to medical education and research, including the prestigious ESR Hughes Award from the Australasian College of Surgeons in 2008. He has established surgical training course in many countries including Canada, Portugal, Spain, Singapore Thailand and New Zealand.
Michael and Pauline returned to Ireland in 2008 to be with there with their four boys who studied at National University of Ireland Galway. Currently Michael is employed as Surgeon in Letterkenny Hospital Donegal and Galway University Hospital. He is secretary of the Donegal Clinical Academy Trust, tasked with advancing research and education in Donegal and building a new research facility at Letterkenny Hospital. He enjoys surfing, painting and cycling.  He has been spotted on occasions in his wife’s café in Letterkenny having lunch! He is delighted to be home and finds Donegal inspirational.
