Ninth Annual Blackboard Awards to honour Teaching Heroes of the Pandemic
In the best of times, being a teacher requires resilience, patience, humour, genius and compassion. In a global pandemic, it also takes guts and grit. And that’s what the teachers of Belfast have in spades.
When the Coronavirus struck in mid-March 2020, the pivoted swiftly to home learning, developed teaching materials, eased pupils – and parents — into the new normal and prioritised provision of digital devices to ensure the less well-off did not fall behind.
In short, teachers were an anchor for society during the Covid storm, going above and beyond to ensure the education of our children did not fall victim to the virus.
When the call came to reopen schools safely, teachers were not found wanting. Our classrooms were repurposed to enable social distancing, sanitiser and mask became as much a part of the schoolroom kit as the pencil case and rubber, Teams and Zoom entered the lexicon and bubbles were no longer something your classmate blew.
Throughout it all, teachers answered the call. Their courage and resolve has been an antidote to the fear and confusion which Covid engenders.
Their commitment a boon to a community under siege from the coronavirus.
Now we give you an opportunity to nominate your Teaching Hero of the Pandemic at the Ninth Annual Blackboard Awards.
We welcome nominations for teaching assistants, teachers, principals and support staff at our schools. In this uncertain time, all are schoolroom Samurai, all are essential workers, all are frontline workers. All deserve our praise.
